Dr. Arnold Krumm Heller (Germany, 1876 - Mexico, 1949), professor of Medicine of the University of Berlin and medical colonel of the Mexican army, has been one of the most important prominent figures of the Gnosticism in the last two centuries. Outstanding humanist and scientist of his time, traveled to Chile at the end of the 19th century, where he got in touch with the spiritualism from an Allan Kardec's work. After studying the spiritualist currents and phenomena, he passed a stage in which he defined himself as a convinced spiritualist and managed to found, with a group of friends, a magazine called “The Astral Glint”. After this stage, he started realizing the limitations of the spiritualism, which led him to go deeply into other fields of the esotericism with the help of Blavatsky and the Theosophy, which would lead him to suspend the mentioned publication. With the years, he would come to the following conclusion: “The practice of acting as medium besides being ridiculous is deeply immoral”, as he exposes it in his own autobiography.
During that same time he also went deeply into occultist works of authors like Dr. Gerard Encausse (Pappus), Eliphas Levi, Stanislaus de Guaita, Kiesewetter, Claudio de San Martin and others. After some time, he would come also to another conclusion: “These authors were and are even today the best in the matter, and the reader who could find the key of the secrets contained in their works, will become a Rosicrucian like Nostradamus, Paracelsus, etc.; but I believe that not even one will find it and it will happen to them like it did to me: the more it is read, the bigger is the confusion in which one gets entangled”.
His interest for the practical esotericism led him to get in epistolary contact with Pappus and the Martinist order, where he met the man who taught him “the philosophy and the secrets of the Unknown one”, and led him to experience and verify most of the mysteries of the invisible world. Likewise, he goes more deeply into the studies of anthropology, of the religions, the compared cultures, the Hermetism, etc. … traveling through Colombia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, France, Germany, Spain, etc. … without giving up any contact with other esoteric orders and persons of high influence of his time. He himself would say in his book “Logos, Mantram, Magic”, the following:
“I, that have almost half a century studying these matters, have the highest degrees of the Freemasonry, 3-33-97, that have belonged to the esoteric section of the Theosophical Society, a member of more than twenty secret societies like the O.T.O. and the A. A. in which I have the highest degree; I that am a bishop of the Gnostic Church, consecrated with the primitive and Anglican ordinal, that as Knight Commander of the Rosicrucian Fraternity have connection with the White Fraternity, the Hierarchy of the Invisible one; I that have belonged to the old guard of Pappus, Eliphas Levi, and dealt personally with the principal occultists of the world, I declare that in my opinion in the vocalization, in the use of the mantrams and the prayer and through the awakening of the sexual secretions, resides the only path to reach the goal, and everything else, which is not through here, is a pitifully waste of time”.
